So, I get to see all kinds of skin on a daily basis. I am so thankful for all the skin types, skin issues, and skin conditions I get to deal with everyday and I honestly get excited when I have a client whose skin does something amazing to me. So, here’s the skinny, I was doing a facial on a very nice woman who usually uses retin A and glycolic acid on a weekly basis. Now, I am not a big fan of Retin A, but that is basically because a lot of people miss use it. Just a quick FYI for those who don’t know what Retin A is…simply put it is an anti-aging product that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and some also use it for acne treatment as well. It is very aggressive and could cause other skin issues later on, like making your skin VERY sensitive to the sun which could lead to other issues…just fyi.
Well, this was an older woman and I normally frown on Retin A usage but it seems as though this woman was using it correctly becasue she didn’t have that overlly red appearance to the skin that normally happens when someone over uses Retin A. Anyway, I had just finished cleansing her face with my DMAE Defying cleanser and it was like her skin had this shinny almost reflective appearance to it. It was sooo shiny that I had to stop myself from poking her skin to make sure it was real because it literally looked like “plastic!”.
I can honestly say I was VERY impressed and after the facial her skin just glowed. The product absorbed wonderfully and the texture was smooth and flawless. I just had to say, she was doing something right with her home skin care or perhaps she was just one of those who just “got it like that”.
The moral of the story, sometimes product ingredients can be VERY controversial and a bit too aggressive, especially when there has been negative results from using such products. Although, I am against using harsh chemicals on the skin I have honestly found that when some are used CORRECTLY -not over used and not sporadic ussage- then it truly can be effective.
Mark this day because this may be the ONLY time I would say such a thing but since I’ve seen such a positive result with my own eyes, I can truly say proper usage of Retin-A can be effective…in a good way. Always keep in mind though that “too much of a good thing is still too much”. If you feel you must use product with ingredients such as Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, etc. please use wisdom and be mindful of the percentage of the ingredient.
If you ever need help on understanding how to properly use certain products with these or other “aggressive” ingredients, please speak to your physician and I would be glad to help as well :).
So, That’s the Skinny…The Skinny on Skin 101!
